In 1620, the Mayflower docked at Plymouth, MA. The passengers of the ship were people who had left everything behind in search of a better life. Those who survived the journey learned to cultivate the land thanks to the people of the native tribes living in the new world. This was only possible because of a Native American named Squanto, who spoke English in addition to his mother tongue. This allowed him to act as an interpreter and guide for the pilgrims. Thus, was founded the colony of Plymouth. It was the first settlement of Massachusetts, which along with 12 other colonies, eventually became the United States of America.

400 years have passed, but certain things have not changed. In a foreign land, it is necessary to learn the language and customs in order to survive. In this time of globalization, the need to speak the language of the world is a reality, even for those who will never leave their countries of origin.

Just as the Mayflower survived her treacherous journey across the Atlantic, so will you overcome this sea of difficulties. Together, we will break through the language barrier and you will exponentially increase your opportunities for a better life.

English Levels

LEVEL 1

BASIC USER

(A1 and part of A2 of CEFR)

At this level you will understand and use everyday expressions and basic phrases related to personal and family information designed to meet concrete needs such as shopping, getting to know your city, getting around, meeting new people and looking for a job. You will use present tense verbs and be introduced to the use of past and future verbs. You will be able to introduce yourself, ask and answer questions about where you live, talk about people you know and things you have, describe in uncomplicated terms
aspects of your professional training, skills and experience. You will be able to interact in a
straightforward way, but still need the person with whom you are talking to speak slowly and help you understand them. You'll also be able to read and write simple texts.

Competency: simple present tense, present continuous tense

LEVEL 2

INTERMEDIATE USER

(Part of A2 and B1 of CEFR)

At this level you will have a complete review of what was covered in level 1 and we will no longer use Portuguese in the classroom. Now you will begin to better understand the main points of a standard and clear dialogue about family matters, encounters at work, at school, at leisure, in medical care, etc.
You will be able to better describe your experiences in the present and will competently understand your use of past and future verb tenses. You will begin to confidently express your dreams, plans, hopes and ambitions. You will begin to feel secure giving reasons and explanations for your opinions and be able to produce elementary texts on topics that are familiar or of personal interest.

Competency: simple past tense, past continuous tense, future tense

LEVEL 3

INDEPENDENT USER

(Part of B1 and B2 of CEFR)

At this level you will already be interacting with native people with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that will make communication possible without much effort for both parties. You will understand the main ideas of standard texts of lesser complexity. With dedication to your studies, you will feel safe to pursue a better paying job as your English will now allow it. You will be producing clear texts, with a higher level of detail and organization, adhering to the rules of the English language. You will be reading, writing, and having discussions about a wide variety of subjects and be able to explain your views, presenting advantages and disadvantages in a variety of situations.

Competency: present perfect tense, present perfect continuous tense, past perfect tense

LEVEL 4

MEDIUM PROFICIENT USER

(Part of B2 and C1 of CEFR)

This level will be dedicated to your understanding of a wide variety of long, complex and demanding
texts. You will understand everything you read, be able to engage in scholastic research, enter an undergraduate or graduate program, improve your performance in any type of employment in which you may be involved. Paramount to your success will be your commitment to often reading texts in areas of
knowledge that interest you. You will be reaching a level of fluency and spontaneous expression, with minimal hesitation or thought when searching for words. Use of the language will be flexible and effective for social, academic and professional purposes. You will produce clear, well-structured and detailed texts and have command of organizational language patterns.

What is CEFR?

The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages was created in 2001 by
the European Council with the objective of offering guidance to language teaching professionals
and students by outlining skills that should be developed at each level of learning. CEFR
organizes language proficiency into six levels, A1 to C2, which can then be regrouped into three
broader tiers: basic user, independent user and proficient user, and even may be further
subdivided if appropriate based on the teaching methodology and materials being utilized.
Levels are defined through descriptions of how users will be able to use the language after
passing each one. Based on CEFR, MAYFLOWER has built a framework describing what its
students can expect at each of the levels of the course, correlating each level with the CEFR
levels. These levels were created with the expectation that our students dedicate themselves
diligently to their studies, participate in class and complete their assigned exercises. Our
students’ success will depend on the level of effort given to achieve the objectives of each course level.
